I commissioned this large 36-inch by 36-inch painting by Doug Webb in 1977. Doug was in a transitional period at the time. He was a fine musician, but loved painting even more. I was a record producer who was about to produce an album concept that I created called DrumDrops, an album of different style drum tracks that guitar players, bass players, and keyboard players could all practice their instruments to, as well as helping them write songs. Doug was playing on one of my recording sessions when I described this vision I had of a set of drums falling inside a water drop, then asked Doug to paint the album cover. He did so, and DrumDrops went on to sell over 150,000 copies in guitar stores and quite a few hit songs were written by famous recording artists using the album as inspiration. Over the next few years, Doug Webb went on to become one of the leading Photo-Surrealist painters in the country, with paintings smaller than this one selling in the mid five figures. Doug's work is recognized around the world and his paintings and prints are still in top demand. DrumDrops is considered to be a "Retrospect" painting of Doug Webb, but it is the only album cover Doug ever painted. Ask any musician about DrumDrops that was playing or writing songs in the early 1980's, and they'll probably tell you that at one time they owned a print of this painting. |
